Due to the lack of voter turn out we have both a republican congress and a republican president, This though is the beginning of a GOP. takeover of the entire Federal process, Trump and McConnell plan to pack the federal judiciary with conservative judges.
An article in Time Magazine dated 2/19/2018 states Donald Trump has bragged he already has 12 appeals court judges confirmed. Four times as many as president Obama confirmed in the same time frame.Trump has nominated 80 federal judges and, 24 judges have already been confirmed.
These judges are mostly white and male. Several have spurred controversy with their comments These judges will be sympathetic to claims about gun rights, religious freedom and free speech. These judges will stand against abortion and liberal interpretations of immigration.
During President Obama 2 terms McConnell had blocked president Obama’s appointees in order to have a chance to pack the courts when he out of office. This tactic became a minor crisis when Merrick Garland was being confirmed for the supreme court.
If more Americans were in a habit of voting we would not have this crisis in our court system.
